As many of you have been asking me about it, I thought I could share this message so people are aware of the situation.
Blast16, SNESES and 8bitNESs developments are NOT cancelled, but frozen. Many things changed in my life after Blast16 and SNESES, and while I’ve tried many times to get back to 8bitNESs, I’ve always had a hard time to spend more than an hour here and there, and I need to be much more focused on it to bring a quality app.
Small FAQ:
Q. Will there be a 8bitNESs release?
A. That’s still my intention, but I can’t say when it will come. The moment I find more time to dedicate to it, I will get back to this new version.
Q. Will there be updates to Blast16 and SNESES?
A. Not very likely. Both are in a very good state of functionality and stability, and while you can always add more features, I’m not a big fan of complex frontends.
Q. Will there be more frontends based on other systems?
A. Maybe, but not in a very long time (and 8bitNESs would go first). My favorite consoles already have their frontends, and while I wanted to make the NES version to “close the trilogy”, there are not many other systems I love as much as Mega Drive and SNES.
That said, I might explore the idea of making other systems through crowdfunding. Developing this is very time-consuming, so if I ever went back to it, I would need it to bring some revenue.
Q. Will there ever be ports for Raspberry Pi 4/Windows/whatever?
A. I wouldn’t say “never” but it’s also unlikely. I tried porting both the frontends and Retroarch to RPi4 when it was just released, and I could never make them run. I wouldn’t even start a crowdfunding for this, as I wouldn’t ask for money for doing something I’m not 100% sure I can do.
